Autumn depression - a myth or no?

Rain, cold, changes of temperature, gloomy weather and other factors… Apparently, each of them could cause a persistent feeling of sadness and apathy which is often called a depression disorder. No doubt, I agree with the thought that actually depression is much more serious problem and it is even considered to be an illness. But nevertheless, I ponder that shifts of season truly affect our attitude to others and outlook on life.

What do you think about such kind of question? Does a depression disorder due to change of season really exist?

My vision of this problem is evident and clear: YES. When I was much younger, I didn’t notice that. I have no mood swings and to be honest I was thrilled to bits with that state… Because now my mood is so flexible and influenced by lots of conditions that sometimes in the evening I feel dismal and miserable and want nothing to do. When fall comes, I become more sentimental and each trifle can make me burst into tears. I realize that mood shifts is not the only symptom of depression and inevitably there should be lots other things. Still it seems to me that this one is surely important and has to be taken into consideration if you have the same problem.

I don’t know exactly how to help people suffering from a seasonal depression, though they must try their utmost in order to fight that issue. Here are some tips:

  • Try to spend time with relatives or friends who give you support and you absolutely feel confident with. In a word, your near and dear ones.
  • The flipside of the first recommendation is to get rid of people that make you feel devastated.
  • Treat your health carefully. Sleep enough and do all the possible so that you are able to eat more healthy food.
  • Make time for yourself. Develop your skills and uncover new hobbies. I feel in my bones that if you are distracted by things that make you happy, you forget about bad ones.
  • Do exercises. Some people say while doing sport they lose bad energy and receive positive instead.

I strongly hope that you are not suffering from any mental illnesses, but if you are please try to contact a psychologist and follow the recommendations that are mentioned above. 💗

THANK YOU for reading <3

P.S. Why have I chosen such a topic? In my point of view, it’s certainly relevant to have a small talk about seasonal depression while it’s raining non-stop throughout the day.

  1. That's a nice list of recommendations. Yet I would rather use the phrase feeling blue. Depression is indeed a serious disorder and in majority of cases people need professional help. Thanks for sharing!
